Install Gizmo on Your Nokia: Nokia eSeries with Gizmo (SIP VoIP)

How can I make Internet Calls on my Nokia mobile phone?

Have you ever called a contact from your Nokia mobile phone and noted the option to Call using an "Internet call"? Have you ever wondered what the Internet call refers to? Then this entry is for you.

In technical terms, Nokia refers to VoIP with the following definition:

"Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) refers to the capability of routing voice conversations over IP-based networks, such as the Internet. VoIP has rapidly expanded from the PC-driven experience to mobile networks. Mobile VoIP can use any IP bearer, such as home and office WiFi networks or telecom networks. The S60 platform supports the use of mobile VoIP services and the creation of related applications. Also selected Series 40 devices are shipping with VoIP client."

However to break this down, it simply means that you can now use your mobile phone to make calls over the Internet as opposed to using telephone networks. This is similar to services such as Skype.

While you can install Skype and other VoIP programs onto your mobile phone, Nokia has enabled services on the device itself to allow you to instigate an "Internet call" from the contact within your address book.

To enable this to occur on my device, I use the Gizmo VoIP SIP program. The steps to install this are seen below:

  1. Navigate with the phone to www.gizmovoip.com
  2. Select "Nokia E series" or "Nokia N series" - depending on your device
  3. Select "Install Gizmo VoIP" *
  4. Select "Download now"
  5. "Install Gizmo VoIP?", selected "Yes" then "Continue"
  6. When asked "Configure Gizmo internet call service?", I selected "OK"
  7. When asked "Do you have a Gizmo account with User ID and Password?", selected "Yes", entered username and password, selected "Done"
  8. The Nokia then shows me list of Wireless networks in the area, I simply clicked on the one I wish to use **
  9. The phone then connected to the Gizmo server and asked "Save network for GIZMO VoIP service?", selected "Yes"
Please Note:

* If you haven't created a Gizmo account, I recommend doing so before installing the Gizmo VoIP adaptor. It might be easier to do this on-line through a PC.
** If you don't wish to use a Wireless service, but would rather use another connection, simply click "Exit" for this step and see below.

Configuring Gizmo with a non-Wireless Service (ie. Cellular Network/Mobile Network)

  1. Go to Menu > Tools > Settings > Connection > SIP Settings
  2. Locate the "GIZMO VoIP" item in the list and click "Options" > "Edit"
  3. Locate the "Default access point" and click to edit this item
  4. Select the connection you would like to use for GIZMO VoIP
  5. Exit
  6. After completing these steps you should now be able to make SIP/VoIP/Internet calls from your Nokia device.

To test this, simply locate a Contact from your list of contacts; then select "Options" > "Call" > "Internet Call". Your phone should ask you to register with the service. Click "Yes" and assuming your settings are correct, your call will be connected.
